What is a doula?
A doula is a woman who supports the mother during pregnancy, labour,
and the newborn period at home. During labour, she may provide
massage, encourage breathing, relaxation, and vocalization. She
suggests comfortable labour positions. She may provide hot/cold
packs or the birth ball. She may explain some of the medical procedures
and suggest options. After the birth, she assists parents in carrying
out the parenting style of their choice, in a non-judgemental
manner. She "mothers" the new mother by giving her a
back rub, foot massage, by carrying out light household duties
while she rests, etc. The doula takes care of the new mother so
she can meet her new baby's needs. A doula may demonstrate bathing,
diapering, and other newborn care techniques. A doula helps the
new mom establish breastfeeding techniques, or instructs parents
on formula preparation. A doula can help the new father by demonstrating
how to hold and care for the newborn. A doula can help with siblings
and run errands.
