Avoid diet pop and sugarless chewing gum!
Aspartame (brand names: NutraSweet, Equal) are found in many foods today. Moms who are aiming at getting back to pre-pregnancy weight may be relying on NutraSweet for help. Dentists often recommend sugarless gum for children to decrease the number of cavities.
But is aspartame safe? For years consumers have been filing complaints listing everything from headaches to brain tumors! The list also includes: seizures, dizziness, blindness, mental confusion, depression, fatigue, muscle/joint pain, numbness, hearing loss, cramping, spasms, skin problems, heart attack symptoms, mood swings. The mother of a three year old claimed her daughter suffers permanent neurological damage due to her consumption of aspartame in children's vitamins.
A study by Dr. John Olney (Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neuropathology, Nov/96) published a study "Increasing brain tumor rates: is there a link to aspartame?". Dr. John Olney is the same scientist who spearheaded taking MSG out of baby food.

"I warn all pregnant women to avoid all forms of glutamate and aspartate, especially aspartame. We know that ingestion of aspartame dramatically increases brain levels of phenylalanine and methanol. Further, methanol is converted within the tissues of the brain into formic acid and formaldehyde, both powerful neurotoxins." Russell L. Blaylock, M.D. (Dr. Blaylock is a neurosurgeon, a clinical assistant professor and researcher who has written and illustrated three chapters in medical textbooks.)
